Last night I performed the first 6 mins of my dance, this was useful to know how to pace myself, where to have my focus and a better idea of what to do for lighting. I also got really good feedback with bits that looked really good and what to change to make it better.

Section One: Title, objective, responsibilities

Title or working title of project (in the form of a question, commission or design brief)

How can the words of JRR Tolkien and the media adaptations act as a stimulus for solo dance?

Project objectives (eg, what is the question you want to answer? What do you want to learn how to do? What do you want to find out?):

Can media text be used as a stimulus for solo dance? I want to learn how to create dance from a different kind of stimulus and also learn some more about the works of Tolkien in the process.

If it is a group project, what will your responsibilities be?

Section Two: Reasons for choosing this project
Reasons for choosing the project (eg, links to other subjects you are studying, personal interest, future plans, knowledge/skills you want to improve, why the topic is important):

It is linked to media which I'd like to take at University. I'm also looking at the language that Tolkien created which is linked to English Language that I'm taking. I have always loved the soundtrack to ‘Lord of the Rings’ and have wanted to create a dance to it.

Section Three: Activities and timescales

Activities to be carried out during the project (eg, research, development and analysis of ideas, writing, data collection, numerical analysis, rehearsal techniques, production meetings, production of final outcome, administration, evaluation, preparing for the presentation, etc):

Research the details of ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘The Hobbit’.

Experiment with ideas.

Create a dance.

Create a slideshow/PowerPoint for set and action/reaction.

December 2nd show the work so far.

January 13th show work so far.

Week beginning 24th February final performance.

How long this will take:

Over Summer.

1 week.

4/6 weeks.

2 weeks.

Milestone one: Have music and choreography.

Target date (set by tutor-assessor): 21/10/13

Milestone two: Have a set slideshow with film and pictures.

Target date (set by tutor-assessor): 18/11/13

Section Four: Resources

What resources will you need for your research, write up and presentation (eg, libraries, books, journals, equipment, rehearsal space, technology and equipment, venue, physical resources, finance):

‘Lord of the Rings’ appendices, books and the internet for research, YouTube to find music and video clips. PowerPoint to make slideshow. Rehearsal space. Venue and technology to perform.

What your areas of research will cover?

Finding a stimulus from a non-dance base source.

My proposal form from the beginning of my project.

WAPA Rhiannon LOTR Choreo 22 11 2013

This is the next draft of my dance, I will changing the dwarf section dramatically, but so far I am pretty happy with the rest.

Monday, 25 November 2013

Recently I have choreogrpahed more of my dance, looking at the pice of music 'The Fellowship', the movement is developed from the idea of joining/pulling together, being strong and helping the characters of the story helping each other to get through the journey. I have also choreographed the section to 'Misty Mountains' based on the character of dwarves, it is all very straight and sharp this is influenced my the shape of their settings and where they live. The next piece of music is 'Isenguard' this is based upon the orcs so is ment to come across as quite odd and unplaced, while trying to be a scary character. And the final piece of music is 'Rohan' here I have represented the human race in the story of 'Lord of the Rings' showing strength and weakness, as it will go into Pippin's song, 'The edge of Night' connecting to the clip from the film which I will play behind me.

LOTR The Fellowship of the Ring - Extended Edition - The Prologue: One R...

I have also decided to use this clip at the beginning of my dance, to add interest to the piece but also so I don't have to do as much movement so that I can pace myself. I will show this untill 2:18 and then I will begin the slide show.

Pippin's Song (The Edge of Night) HD with Subtitles

I have been looking for a clip from one of the films to react with as past of my dance, I have chosen this one I was going to use the song but looking at it I have decided that I like the actions of the steward, the emotion that is portrayed by Pippin and the positions of the orcs. Also I can use the charging of the humans to shape this part of the dance.

Today I have also worked on my choreography, here is the improvement to the piece of music 'The Shire' it is based on the hobbits...
...I have introduced some English folk movement as I think it shows the character better while still keeping some round movement and shapes as the setting/scenery they live in!
Today I have started collecting images to go on my slideshow as a rought first draft, I hope to get better quality pictures for the final thing...

...the majority of these images are for the prologue ass I do not do a lot of movement, it is aimed for the audience to get the beginning storyline, enjoy the images and it also means that I can pace myself for this long solo performance.

Tuesday, 5 November 2013

Here is the first draft of the first 5ish minuets of my choreography, it includes: a prologue (introducing the story and the type of movement some of the different characters may have); a small battle section; a piece created with stimulus of a hobbit (to the music 'The Shire') and some elf movement at the end.

Sunday, 3 November 2013

I haven't posted on here for a while but I have been working!!
I've been getting all my music together, I now have all of the music that I will use for my performance and have edited some of it.
I have also choreographed quite a bit of movement in particular the prologue trying to tell a story through gesture and trying to introduce different characters movement, e.g elves, dwarves and men. I have also made some movement to the piece of music 'the Shire' using round arms as the hobbits front doors are circular.

Sunday, 22 September 2013

Today I have spent around an hour looking at images on Pinterest for shapes in the set, costume and even letters within the works of Tolkien, which I can use as a stimulus for either movement to go in my dance or the shape/structure of the dance itself!
This will be a blog so you can follow my journey through my research of my Extended Project about a solo dance influenced by the works of Tolkien!
